Tourism in India

Tourism in India is economically important and growing rapidly. We all know India is culturally rich with historical heritage and diverse flora and fauna. The major reason behind the success of tourism industry in India is due to the availability of all aspects of resources related to tourism as admirable monuments, ecological diversity, biodiversity, wildlife, mountains and natural beauties.

India has always been known for its hospitality, uniqueness and charm that allures foreign tourist.

Different types of tourism in India are as follows:

  • Adventure tourism
  • Wildlife tourism
  • Medical tourism
  • Pilgrimage tourism
  • Ecotourism
  • Cultural tourism

India has 36 world heritage sites that are recognised by United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural organisation(UNESCO) as of August 2017, as Taj Mahal one of the new 7 wonders of the world in Agra, Rani ki Vav in Gujarat, Parshavnath temple at Khajuraho etc.

The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 ranks India 40th out of 136 countries overall. As some of the cities worldwide ranking as Delhi 28 Mumbai 30, Chennai 43, Agra at 45, Jaipur at 52 and Kolkata at 90. Due to the cheap facility as inexpensive hotel and transport and implementation of e- visa in November 2014 attracted tourists in large extent.

As from sources, foreign tourists visited India in September 2017 was 7.23 lakh as compared to 6.08 lakh in September 2016 and 5.43 lakh in September 2015 according to a statement by a ministry. The world travel and tourism council calculated that India generated 14.02 lakh crore or 9.6% of total GDP of 2016 and supported 40.343 million jobs i.e 9.3% of the total employment.

Most tourists came from Bangladesh (29.65%) followed by US (10.24%), the UK (7.04%), Srilanka (3.98%), Australia (3.50%), Malaysia (3.32%), and Germany (2.57%) among others.
